About:
My interest in chemistry goes back to primary school days where I was having the chemistry toolbox now forbidden (with reason) in many countries. Growing up I did not loose my interest and decided to study chemistry at university of Leiden (The Netherlands). Being interested in other areas of chemistry I did, next to my traineeship in organic chemistry, one on pathological chemistry in the university hospital of Leiden. After having finished my "doctorate" I started to work on a thesis on the synthesis of bacterial celmembrane components not in the latest lipid A under the supervision of late Prof. Jaques van Boom. This interest in biological active molecules was elaborated on by joining Organon, a Dutch innovative pharmaceutical industry, after I finished my PhD. Looking back at my secondairy eduction I can say we had plenty of hours on math, physics and chemistry. Unfortunately this now disappeared in The Netherland. Moreover, the training in b-sciences is under pressure in Italy (where I live now and where my children go to school). Hence, I think we should not only increase appreciation and interest in chemistry but we should influence decission makers on the educational funding ensuring a "sustainable" scienctific community in our society reflecting the impact science has on this society. IYC 2011 should have an impact on this!
