I am yenenew Shumalem from Ethiopia, graduated B.Sc degree in Dryland Agriculture at Mekelle University, Ethiopia, and worked at the Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Development for around five Years. While I was serving in this organization I began to understand the issues related to the environment. Pollution, nowadays, has become one of the emerging factors creating a major threat to all the living organisms. The increasing trend of urbanization and industrialization has created pollution which made us to think about a control mechanism. In Ethiopia, especially in Addis Ababa city, the rapid expansion of industrialization has created intensive air pollution.
This environmental issue influenced me a lot and consequently I joined the M.Sc program in Environmental Engineering in order to contribute something from my side to reduce the increasing pollution. During this program, I learned about environmental pollution of air, water, soil, and methods to prevent pollution. The study also elaborated on the interaction between people and environment, and focused on the development of sustainable solutions to environmental problems. During this time, I developed a desire to protect the environment and improve the quality of life of humans and other living things in an effective, sustainable and economic way.
I have specifically interested in the IYC 2011 how to inspire people with chemistry. Chemistry is every thing. Life, resources, and even the universe directly or indirectly connected with chemistry. There fore, my interest is to inspire people with chemistry.
Thank you in advance for your usual cooperation and assistance.
