I am a natural products chemist working at the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS). Areas of research focus include marine natural products chemistry (isolation and structure elucidation), biodiscovery (bioassay guided-fractionation), marine chemical ecology (with a focus on coral-algal symbiosis and sponge-bacteria symbiosis) and identification of chemical cues involved in coral larval settlement. I am currently expanding my research into metabolomics of the coral and sponge holobionts in order to better understand the effects of stresses on these organisms and their ability to recover from them. This research is highly relevant to improving the general understanding of iconic coral reefs.
AIMS has recently started a "Women in Science" group to link young female scientists with mentors, and to encourage exchange of information and ideas. I am hoping to provide regular updates and useful information from The International Year of Chemistry (2011) to this group, which also includes analytical and geochemists, as a way of increasing the profile of chemistry at AIMS.
